After a good sailing season, it is now time to think about winterizing your boat or yacht before winter to avoid the risks of frost, mould and premature ageing of the boat. Winterization will keep your boat in good condition and will facilitate the return to service in spring.
Boats that spend the winter afloat need to be monitored regularly, especially when the weather forecast is poor.
While some of the work can be done by yourself, it is recommended that you hire a professional boater to ensure that the work is done reliably and professionally and to provide you with proof of maintenance.
To winterize your boat, follow these steps:
- Empty your boat completely and clean all accessories.
- Check the safety equipment (distress flares, fire extinguisher, life jackets, etc.)
- Clean the floor, storage lockers, consoles, furniture, seats and cushions with water or specific products (preferably organic) (dry vertically and store dry)
- Dismantle the mechanical accessories and reassemble them after cleaning and greasing them.
- Empty the fresh water tank and leave the cap open to allow air to circulate.
- Coat your stainless steel with a protective layer.
- Check the mooring lines and fenders to protect your boat from possible gusts of wind.
- Install a dehumidifier in the cabin(s).
- Remove all batteries from equipment to reduce the risk of acid leakage.
- Place a tarpaulin to allow air to pass through for better ventilation of the boat.
Once you have done all these winterization tasks, it is time to think about the engine, which is a major component of your boat.
To ensure the performance of inboard, outboard, 2-stroke or 4-stroke engines, they must be winterized to ensure proper operation during your sea trips.
Winterizing an engine is a delicate operation depending on the type of engine and requires a minimum of mechanical knowledge and practice.
